startup logo pricing
Startup logos cost anywhere from free to $100,000. Here's what you're actually paying for.
What you get at each price tier, and what to budget if you want to do this once.
Ask five people what a startup logo should cost and you'll get five different numbers. That's not because nobody knows, it's because the price tiers aren't selling the same thing.
What you're actually paying for
A logo file is easy to make. A logo that's actually right, built on a real decision about who you are and who you're talking to, is what costs money. The price difference between tiers mostly comes down to how much of that thinking actually happened.
The price tiers
| Tier | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| AI generator | Free to ~$50 | Generated, not designed, no real thinking behind it. Full breakdown |
| Freelance marketplace | $50 to $500 | Inconsistent. Quality and process vary a lot. |
| A focused studio | $500 to $2,000 | Fixed process, real judgment, usually one person or a small team. |
| A branding agency | $10,000 to $100,000+ | Same core thinking, plus a team, meetings, and months added to the timeline. |
I sit in the focused-studio tier: $499 to $899, fixed price, no agency layer added on top. Building a SaaS product specifically? See logo design for SaaS companies.
Why the range is so wide
Agencies charge more mostly for overhead, a team, a longer process, months instead of days, not necessarily sharper thinking. Freelance marketplaces are cheap because there's no real process behind the price, you're gambling on whoever picks up the job. Somewhere in between is a studio small enough to skip the overhead, but still built around a real process.
The real cost isn't the sticker price
Redoing a logo later costs more than the gap between a free tool and a proper one now. Every early-stage founder is weighing whether to spend the money today, the actual comparison is the price now against the price of doing it twice. See when that timing actually matters if you're still deciding.
So, how much should you budget?
For an early-stage startup doing this once, properly, budget $500 to $900. That's roughly what I charge, enough to get real thinking behind the mark without agency overhead attached. See what's included at that price, or start now.

Is $499 too cheap for a professional logo?
No. Cheap and low-quality aren't the same thing, they just describe different cost structures. A solo studio with no agency layer can charge less than an agency without cutting the thinking that actually matters.
Why do agencies charge $10,000 or more for the same thing?
Mostly overhead. A team, a longer process, months of billable time. That pays for the agency's structure, not necessarily a better logo.
Should I just wait until I have more traction to spend on this?
If you genuinely can't afford it yet, wait. But if you can afford $499 now, waiting doesn't save you money, it just moves the cost to later, when you'll likely pay to redo it anyway.
